How to Have a Difficult Conversation Having difficult conversations at work is one of those issues that separate effective business leaders from the average employee. Savvy business leaders know how to have conversations that will lead to the root of the issue quickly, making them more effective in their work setting. Professionals who know how to facilitate effective communication when faced with a conflict can redirect an argument towards dealing with the underlying issue. They are people who lead others around them from being ordinary opponents to extraordinary teammates. Difficult conversations, however, are not just the ones linked with a major conflict. A difficult conversation is any conversation that you are avoiding that would move the organization forward if it was completed. The same skills that are needed to conduct these conversations also apply when trying to dig out the appropriate requirements that are needed to effectively accomplish the task at hand. More and more workplaces are filled with relationships that are not governed by authority, such as manager and subordinate. Rather, we find ourselves in a world where we are responsible for getting work done, but do not have the personal authority to simply delegate the tasks to be done. Learning to have difficult conversations moves the work forward using power based on influence rather than coercion, and helps the people involved develop a richer understanding of each others' perspectives.
